As Glendale Police Chief Debora Black inspects new recruits during pre-academy, no detail goes unnoticed. She immediately spots that one recruit’s uniform pants have not arrived. “The shirt will probably fit better once they do,” she notes. Another recruit gets high marks for exceptionally shined shoes. But one thing that chief does not pay attention to is gender. “There are no different standards between men and women. They just look different,“ she says.

It’s a message the chief stresses to everyone from school kids to new recruits like Brooke Hanley.
