Ashland police sergeant Michelle Tutor is a woman who has never been one to give in to adversity or a challenge.

Perhaps that trait is one of the major reasons she was recently named “Woman Police Officer of the Year” by the Wisconsin Association of Women Police, the state organization which aims to strengthen, unite and raise the profile of women in police work. The WAWP is affiliated with the International Association of Women Police to promote the professional and personal development of its members through training, mentoring and networking.

Tutor, 46, recently became the first female officer on the Ashland Police Department to be promoted to police patrol sergeant. Appropriately enough, she had her new shield pinned on in ceremonies before the Ashland City Council by Ashland Mayor Debra Lewis, Ashland’s first elected woman mayor. It was a high point for Tutor, who had to overcome the challenges of being a single mom to take a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, and rise from being a volunteer at Bayfield County to an entry-level position as a police dispatcher to patrol officer and then as sergeant in charge of her own patrol shift. – READ MORE
