Tasmanian Police Women Celebrate 100 Years In The Force

Gone are the days of female police officers being forced to wear skirts and use the male toilets in their workplace, but there is still a way to go before the glass ceiling is smashed, Tasmania Police’s top female cop says.

This year marks 100 years since the first woman, Kate Campbell, joined Tasmania Police in Hobart.

In 1917, Officer Campbell’s role included monitoring truancy, making sure children were “properly attended to”, patrolling the “poorer” areas of town, ensuring women and girls had appropriate accommodation and visiting public houses and factories that employed women.

A second woman joined Tasmania Police in Launceston later that year, and by 1960 there were 10 women employed by Tasmania Police. – READ MORE
