When Anne Kirkpatrick returns to Memphis this year for her 40th high school reunion, she’ll have a pretty solid answer to the question, “So what are you doing now?”

Kirkpatrick, a graduate of Hutchison School and the University of Memphis and a former Memphis police officer, takes over as the first female chief of police in Oakland, California, on Feb. 27.
