Female Police Officers: Recognized For Achievements

Women have greatly contributed to policing around the world.

We have included below some of the women who have been recognized for their contributions to their police organization and the communities they serve:

Female Ex-Hockey Star Now Walking Cop’s Beat (Nov 2012) – The blue lights flash, and Boston Police officer Stephanie O’Sullivan stomps on the accelerator. While investigating a possible midnight break-in in Dorchester, her fingers dangle above her revolver, like Gary Cooper in “High Noon.” After the “all clear” is given, she relaxes. Being a police officer isn’t a whole lot different from being a Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame player, she says.

Female Police Awards: Training Initiatives Praised – A dynamic sergeant who created a training programme to prevent deaths in police custody as well as spearheading several other initiatives has been praised for her performance.

Sgt Joanne Caffrey was commended by judges at the British Association for Women in Police (BAWP) awards ceremony in Edinburgh for her tenacity, which has driven her to improve performance in every post she served in.

Interpol Delegates Elect First Female President – More than 1,000 delegates attending INTERPOL’s 81st General Assembly elected a woman as the organization’s president for the first time. The international law enforcement organization’s meeting ended Nov. 8 in Rome after the delegates elected Mireille Ballestrazzi, deputy central director of the French Judicial Police. She will serve a four-year term.

“I am wholly committed to the fundamental role INTERPOL must play in global police cooperation,” Ballestrazzi said. “By establishing the INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation and leading other recent initiatives, INTERPOL has placed itself at the forefront of innovation which I will continue to fully support. There is no doubt that this direction will open up drastically new perspectives for INTERPOL and its member countries worldwide as we face together the challenges of today and tomorrow.” Read more 

Female Police Awards: Two Honoured For Bravery – Two officers have been honoured with a national bravery award after dealing with a man armed with a knife who lashed out and stabbed one of them in the arm.

PCs Shona Beattie and Katie Deas, of Tayside Police, impressed judges at the British Association of Women in Policing awards with their courage and bravery when they tackled a man armed with a knife who was threatening to kill himself. Read more

Sergeant Is Female Officer Of The Year – A sergeant’s passion for the Job and exemplary leadership skills in tackling crime in her neighbourhood has secured her the female officer of the year title.

Sgt Kym Jones, of West Midlands Police, was awarded the British Association of Women in Policing accolade at a glittering awards ceremony in Edinburgh which recognised the outstanding work of females across the policing spectrum. Read more
