City Appoints First Female Superior Officers

HAVERHILL — Two veteran female police officers and lifelong city residents have broken the department’s glass ceiling to become the first permanent superior officers — fire or police — in Haverhill’s long history.

Doreen Champagne, 38, and Meaghan Buckely, 36, were given their sergeants stripes Tuesday in a ceremony in Mayor James Fiorentini’s office that also included the promotion of patrolman John Spero to acting sergeant.

Champagne was appointed acting sergeant in March 2013 and already has been performing the duties of the position, which primarily includes overseeing patrolmen during her shift. – Read More
