FOLEY — Foley Police Chief Katie Lang recently joined the small roster of Central Minnesota women who hold positions of leadership in area law enforcement agencies.
Among departments across Central Minnesota, Lang is the only female police chief.
That isn’t uncommon. National research shows that female officers are not proportionally represented through the ranks. But researchers say that should be changing soon: Men and women in law enforcement are seeking promotion at equal rates today.
As of 2007, women make up 12 percent of all officers in local police departments, up from about 8 percent in 1987, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
