Sgt. Shannon Persuhn is the first female sergeant in the history of the Aberdeen Police Department, according to Chief Henry Trabert, but the chief notes her gender had nothing to do with her promotion earlier this year.

“She got it because she deserved it,” Trabert said of Persuhn, an eight-year veteran of the department. “We picked the best candidate for the job, and it just happened to be her.”

Persuhn, 39, was promoted to sergeant in late May. She is the highest-ranking female member of the Aberdeen Police Department, and she is one of five female sworn officers in a department that has 40 sworn officers.

The department also has eight full- and part-time civilian employees and seven part-time crossing guards, according to the chief.
