South Australia’s police women became the first to receive equal pay in the British Commonwealth, with their creation and existence challenging many standards of the times.

December 1, 2015, marks the 100th anniversary of women joining the South Australian Police force.

At the time of creation, a large percentage of Adelaide’s men were overseas fighting in World War I.

As policing duties shifted towards catering for the women left behind, calls were made to employ female officers.
